Hello to my Camp Broadstone Family

Jude at FontanaWelcome to our 2010 Spring Newsletter.  Happy Spring to all who are winter weary.  We have had a beautiful and bountiful winter season in Boone, something we have not experienced in a long time.  This winter will make the Spring season "oh so sweet" and greatly appreciated.  Already the signs of the changing of the seasons are appearing here.  For those who live at a lower elevation I know you are already knee deep in daffodils, crocus, and robins.

Summer will be here very soon, and we are knee deep in hiring, scheduling camp sites and raft days, developing our programs, creating new Day Camp theme weeks, and preparing for a great summer experience for the campers.

I look forward to spending my summer with our campers and staff,

Jude

Camper Scholarship Fund

AT Donate NowI am very proud to say that due to the generosity of our camp alumni and expecially at a time when charitable donations are down, Camp Broadstone was able to provide over $4100 in scholarship assistance for campers attending 2009 sessions.  The funds helped campers attend the 2 week sessions and the 1 week explorer sessions.  Because more families needed assistance at this time to make the dream of attending camp a reality we awarded scholarships until we almost depleted the fund.  You gave the donations because you wanted others to have the Broadstone experience and so we dispersed the money with that desire in mind.  At this time we have less than $300 in the fund.  This total is the amount that the Broadstone camp store provided from the sales of t-shirts, mugs, stickers, etc.

I anticipate that our request for financial assistance will be even greater this year.   Help us increase our scholarship amount.  If you can donate please give what you can.  Every amount is important and may make the difference in a camper's summer.

I hope you will join in and give what you can afford.  Please follow these four easy steps to donate online:

College Adventure Weekend/Camp Broadstone Receives National Award

AwardAppalachian State University’s Camp Broadstone has received the Eleanor P. Ells Award for Program Excellence from the American Camp Association for its College Adventure Program.

The award is presented to programs that encourage the development of creative responses to societal programs and promote the positive contributions that a camp experience makes to the well-being of individuals and society.

Camp Broadstone’s College Adventure Weekend provides eighth-graders who are potential first-generation, college-bound students an opportunity to learn about higher education and the academic preparation needed to succeed in college. They also learn about financial aid and campus life.

“Students leave the weekend with an understanding of what is required to attend college, an academic and personal strategic plan for the next four years of high school, a clear picture of campus life, and a strong sense of the skills and abilities they already posses to achieve the goal of attending college,” said Susan McCracken, director of external affairs and community relations for the Office of the Chancellor at Appalachian and former director of GEAR UP North Carolina.

Students also participate in activities designed to build leadership and problem-solving skills, self-reliance and perseverance.

“I am now confident and determined to get to and through college and no one or nothing can stop me,” wrote a Statesville middle school student who attended the weekend program.

“College Adventure Weekend is also a wonderful avenue for current college students to serve as mentors. Several Appalachian students who volunteered to work with College Adventure Weekend have gone on to serve as summer counselors with our campus-based GEAR UP and Upward Bound programs,” McCracken said.

Welcome, Jack!

Jack's family in BostonWe are pleased to welcome Jack Chambers as Maintenance Supervisor at Broadstone. Jack joined Broadstone last summer and has already completed numerous projects around camp, including a new hand-washing sink in the kitchen, new doors on the Lodge, and a new coffee and tea display.

Jack came to the High Country about three years ago from Melbourne, Florida, which is also known as the Space Coast. He did research on the Radar Systems that tracked the Space Shuttle, along with the Atlas and Delta rockets that that were launched into space. He loves to run (look for him in the Charlotte Marathon in December), skydive, go offshore fishing, and scuba diving. But… he also loves the mountains. He has been married for 28 years to his sweetheart Robin, a successful Realtor for over 20 years in Florida, who now works for ASU in the Mathematical Science department. They have two boys: Jack 21 and Kyle 16. Jack is a junior at the University of Central Florida, and is looking to go to Pharmacy School after graduation. Kyle is a sophomore at Watauga High School, who plays football, basketball, and baseball.

Summer Staff Spotlight

We are still hiring our 2010 summer staff, and wanted to go ahead and spotlight a few of the stellar staff we already know will be coming back this summer:

Broadstone is all-a Twitter

Broadstone is on Twitter Broadstone has joined the millions of people and organizations around the world using Twitter, the real-time micro-blogging social networking service. We started "tweeting," .a.k.a. posting messages, on a limited basis last summer and have been at it ever since.

Winter in the High Country

This has been a historic winter in the High Country of North Carolina in terms of snowfall and cold weather. According to Ray's Weather Center, Boone has received over 80” as of March 3rd and Beech Mountain over 10 feet. February will go down as the 2nd coldest month on record to date and the snowiest, with 40.3” of snow. Here in the mountains the amount of snow you receive often depends on your elevation and whether or not you are on a western facing slope along the North Carolina/Tennessee border.
